Fast Cats and Mysterious Cows

I’m up way past my bedtime tonight and I’ve spent the better part of the last hour drinking spiced rum and coke and listening to both choral music and organ music on YouTube and LaLa.  It goes without saying that every year around this time, without fail, I tend to fall into reminiscing about my time at the American Boychoir School.  I think any boy who went there would tell you the same thing.  The Christmas season was, without a doubt, the craziest time of the year.  Whether it was a Sunday brunch at the Rainbow Room in New York or a performance at Trinity Cathedral, this time of year was the reason we existed at all.  Everyone wants to hear a boychoir during the holiday season.  Anyhow, over the years I’ve had many experiences and learned many things.  My 3 years at the American Boychoir has and likely always will rank within the top 3 life experiences that I can never repeat and that had the most significant influence on my life.  I’ve always been determined that one day I’d write a book about what it means to be a choirboy and about what it means to be a choirboy singing with the top boychoir in the country.  There’s a LOT to it and of course, I have no time for any of it right now.  ABS recently released another album called Fast Cats and Mysterious Cows.  This is a collection of 30 songs reflecting the varied history of American Songs and Music.  The one that I’m linking to below is of some significance to me for a couple of reasons.  First, I performed this in my 7th grade year with the boychoir.  I had made it by that point to the concert choir and we were doing this song on tours.  It was one of the most challenging pieces I had ever sung and I recall it being rather exhausting to sing.  Second, I remember this because it really showed off the choir.  It showed the depth of our skill and our ability to sing rhythmically and vocally complex pieces and still be 12 year old boys.  It’s not a song everyone will enjoy, it’s contemporary and at the same time melodic.  Enjoy.
