It’s July Already

I can’t believe it’s July already and that my last post on my blog here was way back in May!! So sorry folks, I have just been way to busy to write lately. So tonight, it’s the 4th of July and I’m sitting at home, finally relaxing after a very busy weekend at work. As you all know, I have no life outside of work so that’s all I do….work.

I do have a new video to post here. A couple of years ago I purchased a really nice Cannon HD video camera and over the winter it decided to quit working. As luck would have it (amazingly), I had purchased a repair plan from Best Buy and so I sent it in hoping that I could at least get it working again. No luck. They could not fix it but they did offer to replace it. This was the FIRST and it will likely be the only time in my life when I have actually used one of those extended warranty plans. I hesitated to buy it in the first place but I’m sure glad that I did now. I replaced it with a nice HD Sony Handycam and I’m fully impressed by its abilities. The Cannon was a much better model however it was, not surprisingly, quite complicated and not very user-friendly. This Sony is much better and is more to my skill level when it comes to videos.

So here is my latest video on You Tube. It is a tour through my backyard (in HD if your net connection is worthy). As you can see, I’ve got my fence installed now and all the trees and plants are finally in bloom. I’ll try to update more often on this blog but you all will just have to get used to seeing fewer posts from me for a while until things settle down again for the winter months. Sorry.

Just had to post the video below about a nice little place in Texas overwhelmed by a new neighbors artwork in his front yard.

Why am I concerned about this? I don’t actually care that much but haven’t we reached a point yet in our society where people can just quit being so fucking up tight about anatomical depictions of the human body? Sorry, if your kid is asking what that is hanging between his legs, clearly you’ve failed as a parent and never taught him how to pee. I’m not a parent but I’m no fool to believe some kid is going to need to be lectured about sex as a result of seeing a naked statue. What’s to blame for this repression? Religion. Remember, the world ends on May 21, 2011. Nuff said.

when I was 17 and why has it taken 18 years to finally get to this point on National TV? I hate to be sentimental but honestly I’d have given anything to have had a role model on TV that was not some kind of freak show during that time in my life. It’s funny, you don’t realize the things that today’s generation has that you never thought were possible when you were growing up until you see it happen. This applies to all kinds of things but it’s particularly true here.

As I recently stated on Facebook, I’m a sucker for the snappy “synthpop” music genre. I get teased about it on a regular basis, mainly because ”it’s SO gay”. The Pet Shop Boys, Michael and Janet Jackson, many bands from the 80′s and 90′s. I’m also a fan of the alternative music scene (bands like Ben Folds Five, REM, U2 etc.). The video below is from Owl City and I found this on another blog that I read. His music is snappy, heavily processed, crisp, and very clean. His melodies are common but very repeatable and memorable, and the texture he uses on the synthesizers is complex and enjoyable. There are a couple songs off his newest album that I really like, the one below called “Fire Flies” is one of them. Now, before you accuse me of going Beverly Hills 90210 on you, this is the kind of music you’d hear on those teen soap operas that were popular years ago, but how wrong is it to enjoy listening to someone that doesn’t swear in his lyrics and whose messages are not all downers? Too much of the music out there today by pop artists are constantly bitching about the complexities and painfulness of life. They are right, sometimes life is a bitch and shit happens but it isn’t like that every day you know. Sometimes it’s just nice to listen to an upbeat song about nothing in particular. This is one of those songs.

I’m linking below to a 45 minute Bill Moyers Journal TV show on PBS that is a must see for those of you who may not know the background, details, and importance of the recent Poposition 8 trial that took place in California last month. Closing arguments have not been scheduled however they will be very soon. In the video, Olson and Boyes lay out the case, why it matters, what the legal issues actually are and they provide detailed information on why this case is so strong. They are also presented with some tough questions that many supporters of discrimination ask, you can see them defend the position of equality and make the case that this issue has everything to do with the Constitution and has nothing to do with religious beliefs. It’s a long discussion but it’s worth watching.

The “Tilt Shift” technique has become quite the rage lately for photographers and videographers. This technique involves blurring certain portions of the image or video to give us the illusion that things are smaller than they actually are. It’s obviously a bit more complicated than that but it’s designed to trick our senses in order to give the effect. Found this video below that is just amazing. This is 5 minutes in the life of New York City. Watch it knowing that these are real images (sped up a bit), not animated and that nothing more than an optical illusion is occurring in your head.

The reason that equality for the GLBT community is visible in my life time:

15 years ago when I was in high school, there were no major Hollywood celebrities willing to step up to the plate and go to bat for me. Those who did were on the fringes. For me personally, I’m not sure it would had much of an influence in my life, I was never a big celebrity follower but here we have Harry Potter, entirely straight with a HUGE following, and willing to put his money where his mouth is. The Trevor Project was founded not long after I got out of high school and there is a link to it on my sidebar here on this blog. It’s one of the few charities that I’d consider making a donation to. Perhaps you might as well.

If you’ve not seen the movie “UP”, you need to rent it and watch it. I’m a huge fan of Pixar and Disney, they’ve teamed up with”YouTube whiz kid Fagottron” who has produced this great mash-up with scenes from the movie. This is also the guy that did the Marry Poppins video which is sadly no longer available on YouTube. I’ve also posted another one based on scenes from Charley and The Chocolate Factory and one from Bambi. Turn up the volume, have fun!

Another find from one of the many blogs that I read. I’m generally a pretty big fan of close harmony and tight, accurate, and precise pitch when it comes to vocalists. While I’m not a huge fan of some of their songs (all of which are covers from other groups), these kids have it going on with their vocals. You can check out their YouTube page for more songs.

DES MOINES — It’s official.

A joint resolution sponsored by 18 Senate Republicans was introduced Thursday proposing a constitutional amendment specifying marriage between one man and one woman as the only legal union that is valid or recognized in the state.

“This starts the ball rolling. It’s imperative that the citizens of the state of Iowa have something that they can point to as a mechanism to start the ball rolling,” said Sen. Merlin Bartz, R-Grafton.

“Now that we’ve had this introduced in the Senate, they’ll have the opportunity to contact their legislators and ask them to support the Senate joint resolution,” he added.

However, Bartz conceded Senate Joint Resolution 2001 faces nearly insurmountable odds in being debated during the 2010 session — given the steadfast opposition from Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs.

A crowd gathered to express their rage towards homosexuals having been given the right to get married in their state. This group is seeking a ballot measure to repeal marriage equality by popular vote in 2014, the soonest they could possibly get it on the ballot. Thank God those Iowans have their shit together in the state house and understand that equality should never be subject to the whims of the majority.

Watching this, I kept waiting for them to haul out the pitchforks!
